The Kicking System is pleased to announce that The Extra Point Foundation  has a new website (www.extrapointfoundation.org).  Founder John Matich said,”We have finally gotten around to developing a new website for our non-profit sector of our company.  Its still a work in progress but it definetly better than what we hat before.  We plan on developing new ideas and launching our 2009 kicking camp in San Diego that benefits Rady’s San Diego’s Children’s Hospital.”

John explained, “We love to give back to San Diego especially during these hard economic times.” Last year, Travis Golia kicker for Stanford University worked with kids and donated his time. Ethan Lickert, from Horizon HS, won the field goal event.

Mitch Berger, Steelers Punter, Super Bowl Sunday NFL

January 30th, 2009

As we head into Super Bowl Sunday TKS wanted to touch upon some connection with the specialists.

I have had the fortunate expierence to meet Mitch Berger, the punter for the Pittsburg Steelers. As a free agent kicker from Boston College I signed with the Minnesota Vikings in 2001.  Mitch was the current punter for the Vikings. He was know for his booming kickoffs and eating a snickers bar during the game.

I remembered that Mitch was a extremely athletic, had a huge kickoff leg and was nearly perfect on holding. As a rookie there is enough pressure just being on a NFL team.

I remember Mitch helping me and providing great holds on field goals.  I believe Mitch and Matt Hasselbeck are the two best holders are I ever worked with. Later in the pre-season I got cut and Gary Anderson went on to hit 40 straight field goals and set some NFL records. I know Gary was a great kicker and a future NFL Hall of Fame player but that year I learned  - “a kicker is nothing without his holder.”

Good luck this Sunday Mitch!

Lee Abelkop, USD Committ

Lee Abelkop, The Kicking System placekicker, has made his commitment!  Lee has committed to play at the University of San Diego.  Lee, from La Jolla High School (San Diego, CA), pulled in offers from Columbia and Cornell and was heavily talking with Clemson University. Lee decided to stay home to play college football and make an impact right away for USD special teams. Head Coach Ron Caragher at USD was excited and pleased about Lee’s commitment.

Lee said, “I enjoyed my visit a few weeks ago and plan on working real hard to prepare for this season. USD was a good college match for me and my family.”

Kicking coach, John Matich explained, “Lee has made a great choice, USD got one of the best in the 2009 class in San Diego. I know Lee has work ahead of him but I plan on going to every home game and cheering him on!  Last year Brian Stohavich committed to SDSU and now having Lee at USD, TKS cant be any happier.  As with Brian this has been three years in the making. When I first meet Lee he was green with a ton of power, now other kicking coaches are commenting on his kicking technique and are impressed. Congrats Lee!!”

AFCA Convention Recap

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , on January 23, 2009 by kickingsystem

Tuesday January 13th, 2009

I just returned from the annual AFCA Convention in Nashville, TN.  I had a blast!  I had a chance to meet over 30 college football coaches from across the country.  This is the third year in a row, I have had a chance to attend.  This convention runs during a pivotal time during the college recruiting process. As many of the coaches are starting to look for the best kicker and punters in the 2009 class. Many of also looking at the 2010 class as well.

During the morning on Sunday, I talked with long time friend Toby Neinas, now special teams coordinator from the University of New Mexico. I also had a chance to talk to the Special Teams Coach Andre Powell from Clemson University.

In the afternoon I had lunch with QB ocach and kicking coach for William & Mary, Christian Taylor.  During the rest of the day I had nice conversations with multiple head coaches and assistance coaches from IVY League schools to DIII schools. Many asked about my current crop of kicking prospects. There were plenty more, but unfortunely, I taper my list for fear of other kicking coaches stealing information.

This TKS class of 2009 is abundant in talent. I provided each coach with reffereals and spreadsheet of kicking prospects for 2009 and class of 2010. Jason Myers, Mater Dei HS, has a ton of talent, and was named TKS Kicker of the Year.

I always ask myself at this point in the year for recruiting and high school football coaches. “Do college special teams coaches know what they are looking for?”  What I dont understand, is that college coaches usually look a prospects statistics and then look at thier DVD.  From there they base their judgement. Can you truly make a accurate assement on a kicker if you never seen them kick live? Do they know how to evalualate a 17 year-old high school kicker?  I always wonder about that. Thats why I travel to these events because my refereal as a kicking coach goes a long way when kickers are not often recruited enough.

Dont get me wrong I believe there are some college coaches that know what there are talking about. For example, Toby Neinas at UNM, he does his reseach, learns to art of kicking and just last year picked up a great punter Brian Stohavich from San Diego, CA. He watched him the TKS SDSU Kicking Camp watched him during his senior season and watched him at the TKS Kicking Combines for a number of years.  As a freshmen punter, he was the lone bright spot for for SDSU football. But for the most part coaches look at a DVD and try to asses a kicker or punters abilities.

That why I think its essential to add close up practice film on your highlight DVD. TKS has partnered with The Sports TV (www.thesportstv.com)  to produce the best football kicking DVD’s around. As you can see on our prospects page, there are some high quality video of some talented San Diego kickers and punters. Coaches can at least get a close-up look at their technique. As you know, most high school film is tough to watch and at times dont even follow the ball.

Another highlight was watching San Diego Chargers play the Pittsburg Steelers in the NFL playoffs, at a party sponsored by Field Turf.  There must of been over 200 coaches cramped in this one room with two hugh mega LCD TV’s.   Sadly, the San Diego Chargers lost. Of course during this time, I was busy networking make more contacts for the TKS Kickers and Punters.

Overall the trip was as success, I passed out over 30 DVD’s and almost lost my voice by the end of the trip. Next year I will have to plan to stay longer as there was not enough time to talk to everyone. I gained some new contacts and visited with old friends and wished them luck in their recruiting endeavors.

Mike Scifres, NFL Punter, San Diego Chargers, MVP

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , on January 8, 2009 by kickingsystem

Mike Scrifres, had one of the best games I have seen for an NFL punter.  His 50 + net average was increadible. It shows how kickers and punters can be weapons for their respective teams. I have the pleasure to meet Mike, numerous times, last time was in pre-season camp when I introduced him to Brian Stohavich, punter for SDSU.

The Press-Enterprise
SAN DIEGO – Mike Scifres has been punting in the NFL for six seasons, all with the Chargers. Saturday night’s performance, in which he played a key role in San Diego’s 23-17 overtime playoff victory over Indianapolis, had to be his best as a pro.

“Oh, by far,” he said. “It was my best game ever: high school, college. I couldn’t go to sleep at night and dream about something like that.”

The most visible, most memorable part of Scifres’ evening was his last kick, a punt that bounced out of bounds at the Indianapolis 1 with 2:41 left in regulation, eventually setting up Nate Kaeding’s tying field goal.

Story continues below Frank Bellino / The Press-Enterprise Chargers tight end Antonio Gates, who rested his injured ankle all week, had eight catches for 87 yards.Scifres averaged 52.7 yards on six kicks, including a 67-yarder in the second quarter. He put all six kicks inside the Colts’ 20, an NFL playoff record, and four of them inside the 10.

“It’s always a big deal when you’ve got No. 5 back there punting the ball,” linebacker Stephen Cooper said. “You know you’re going to get field position.

“He’s a Pro Bowl-caliber player, an all-pro punter, and he doesn’t get enough credit. He showed it today.”

Colts coach Tony Dungy called Scifres’ punting “the difference in the game … He just pinned us in the hole all night long.”

In 2006, The Kicking System established the Kicker of the Year award. This award, presented for a number of years by TKS, is given annually to the top place-kicker and punter as determined by a voting panel of TKS Staff, professional kicking coaches and previous winners. Last years winners were co-winners, which included Travis Golia and David Seawright, both who played as freshman in the Pac-10, at Stanford and Cal respectively. In 2006, Brad Greenway, who now is kicking for Cornell University, won the award. The award also takes into account, how the kickers have established themselves as a student-athlete, community service as well as their performance for on the field.
