September 28th, 2009

img_8987On Sunday, TKS continued its 2009 Combine Cycle.  With a solid group from top to bottom, it was a great day of kicking.  Schools from across the  California were represented as far north as the Bay Area.  The camp started with some basic instruction and quickly picked up pace going into the combine. Branden Perry, ended up with the best statstical day going 8 for 9 on field goals and hitting some bombs on kickoffs.  But the day ended with Mike Gruber winning the field goal competition with a booming 53 yard FG.  “I belive Mike should be up for All-State Kicker, he’s just solid!” said TKS Director John Matich. Tyler Strickland, came in firing as well hitting a 4.1 hang time kickoff.  “Thats the best hang time I have see this year from a senior high school player, he is DI worthy,”  said John Matich.

“I cant not believe the talent we had today, I think every kid at this combine should be playing college football somewhere!” said John Matich. Matich went on to say, “Who cares about national rankings and garbage like that, I will stick by these kids and put them up against any ranked kicker.  More importantly these kids perform under pressure and for their high school teams.  In my mind they are national ranked!”

“I had a great time and I believe TKS does a great job from a technique standpoint to aiding me to find the right college. John took the time to watch my game last Friday night and then take video.  After that he edited it and turned the game clips into another highlight tape.  I cant not believe the service I am getting. TKS goes above and beyond anything I could imagine for a kicking coach.” -  Mike Gruber, Christian HS

The next TKS combine is coming in December!

Stay tuned!

ASU PK Weber out 5-6 games with groin injury

Associated Press – September 22, 2009 3:04 PM ET

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) – Arizona State placekicker Thomas Weber will miss five or six games with a groin injury.

Coach Dennis Erickson said Tuesday that either true freshman Bobby Wenzig or senior linebacker Mike Nixon would handle the placekicking duties when the Sun Devils visit No. 21 Georgia on Saturday.

Wenzig hit a 24-yard field goal and made all five PATs in a 38-14 victory over Louisiana-Monroe last week. Nixon kicked six field goals as a senior at Phoenix’s Sunnyslope High School in 2001.

Austin Turner, a sophomore kicker, was named the CIAA’s Speciality Player of the Week for the second time this season after connecting on 3-of-4 field goal attempts against BSU last week. “A native of San Diego, Turner made a 49-yard field goal – his longest of the season – and punted six times for 230 yards. The 49-yard field goal was the longest in FSU history. The previous record of 47 yards, was shared by John Highsmith and Darrell Armstrong. Of those six punts, Turner knocked three inside the 20-yard line.

TKS Kicker, Bobby Wenzig, Recives Good Reviews for his First Start for ASU

BOBBY WENZIG -TKS PUNTER OF THE YEAR

BOBBY WENZIG -TKS PUNTER OF THE YEAR

Late last week I was notified that Bobby Wenzig was going to stat for Arizona State University in place of kicker Thomas Weber. Weber injured his hip flexor in practice and Bobby was called to help kick against Louisana Monroe. Bobby, TKS Kicker of the Year for 2009, took it in stride, kicked a 24 yard Field Goal and had 5 extra points. He also had a 59 yard kickoff average. Not bad considering he barely took any reps during the week in preperation.  Here are some other quotes about Bobby:

“He came in and he kicked off good. He knocked through all the extra points and knocked through the field goal when he had a chance, so it’s pretty hard to complain” — ASU Coach Dennis Erickson on TKS kicker Bobby Wenzigs performance Saturday

“An unexpected newcomer who saw action was walk-on placekicker Bobby Wenzig, and the San Diego Westview did very well in his debut. The true freshman, who performed in lieu of the injured Thomas Weber, had a 24-yard field goal to cap the scoring in the first half, and was good on all of his five PAT attempts. He also averaged 58.7 yards on his seven kickoffs.” -Scout.com

Seawright: New Article for Yahoo Sports & Mike Silver 9/18

September 18, 2009 kickingsystem Leave a comment

September 18th, 2009

Here is another article written by Cal kicker David Seawright.  This was posted in Yahoo Sports, in Mike Silver’s section. Enjoy!

As Cal improved to 2-0 with a 59-7 thrashing of Eastern Washington at Memorial Stadium last Saturday – giving the Golden Bears back-to-back 50-something outings for the first time since 1973 – sophomore kicker David Seawright could have looked ahead to this weekend’s game at Minnesota. Instead, I suspect, he was thinking about his next trip to the library – that’s what happens when you attend the nation’s top-ranked public university (and, for what it’s worth, the school with the country’s seventh (USA Today)/eight (AP)-ranked football team. Oh, and the most morally admirable school) in the U.S.) This week’s academically inclined offering from young Mr. Seawright:

Believe it or not, there is a reason why the word “student” precedes “athlete” in our official description. In order to play on Saturdays, we go to class Monday through Friday, even those especially killer 8 a.m. sections.

This semester, I am taking my first ever psychology class (Psych 160: Social Psychology to be precise), allowing me to verbalize the snare sports fans and student athletes alike often find themselves in.

My professor (and yes, this is a shameless plug for Professor Chen – remember this on our midterm coming up!), while discussing the concept of schemas, lectured on Confirmatory Hypothesis-Testing, which is the tendency to seek information selectively that confirms our preexisting beliefs.

This concept struck me as being particularly applicable to student-athletes on two levels. First, the nature of recruiting essentially exemplifies this notion. It is not uncommon for athletes to deny upper-echelon schools in favor of less prominent universities at the mere suggestion that they may be better suited to play an alternate position.

Conversely, many capable athletes will blow off smaller schools because of a certainty that the Pac-10 will come calling. Players like Kevin Hart, although his situation was extreme, are so convinced of this fact that they pay no attention to other potential suitors.

The second glaring example is the uncomfortably common practice of transferring schools. Some athletes transfer multiple times, simply because they disagree with the amount of playing time received. If they aren’t starting, they don’t want to hear it.

A bit like standing in an echo chamber, isn’t it? Ever lambast the wise Mike Silver via email when he slots your team lower than first (which is where they belong, of course) for his “32 Questions?” Ever turn off ESPN when their panel of “experts” picks against your team?

Here is my confession: I used to be you. Sometimes I still am. My advice? Get over it.

Don’t be that guy (or girl, for all the ladies out there). Media members get paid to do two things: report facts, and offer analysis. When they are particularly good, like my esteemed host, the analysis is derived from those facts. If you don’t like it, sound off on message boards or blogs, where baseless opinions are more than welcome.

I, on the other hand, am not being paid for anything, so I’ll end this study break and reenter the realm of my student half. If you need me, I’ll be buried in my psych textbook.

TKS Kicker at Arizona: Bonano, carries best GPA on team

September 18th. 2009

TKS Alum Jon Bonano, had a nice article written about him in the Arizona Daily Star the other day.  It talks about how balanced Bonano is with his school and football time. Keep up the good work Jon! Jon has the top GPA on the team!

Not just football on brain

Top GPA proves kicker in the know from head to toe

Following every football practice, John Bonano heads straight to the University of Arizona library for a few hours of quiet study.
He has a grade-point average — and reputation — to maintain.
The Arizona Wildcats’ backup place-kicker carries a 3.903 GPA, the highest of any UA football player. Bonano, 19, is majoring in pre-physiology; a sophomore, he wants to finish his undergraduate degree on time before applying to medical school.
On the field, Bonano is climbing the Wildcats’ depth chart. He will travel to this weekend’s game at Iowa as the UA’s No. 2 kicker.
The key, Bonano says, is balance. He is taking 14 units this semester; his toughest class, organic chemistry, requires as much attention as his budding football career.
“I know a lot of guys who go to tutors and stuff, but for me it’s more about balancing schoolwork with football,” he said. “You have to balance things, know how to look ahead, and know how to stay on top of things.”
It’s about time we stay on top of Bonano. Here’s everything you need to know about the Wildcats’ smartest football player.
Academic all-star
Bonano grew up in Salinas, Calif., as an accomplished athlete and scholar. He played football and basketball and ran track at Palma High School. Off the field, Bonano carried a 4.7 GPA, and scored a 2,140 (out of 2,400) on his SAT.
“I was valedictorian of my class,” Bonano said. “I had to give the speech and everything.”
Bonano’s speech touched on his class’ accomplishments.
“The essential theme was that our class was the quiet leaders of tomorrow,” he said. “We had a quiet class, but when it came to athletics and school, we were always successful. I focused on that aspect, on the positive aspects of our class and the different awards we won.”
And the verdict?
“It was a pretty good speech,” he said.
Full ride
Bonano received a full scholarship to the UA as part of the university’s National Hispanic Recognition Program. Bonano is half Puerto Rican — his ancestors moved from Sicily to Puerto Rico generations ago before relocating to Northern California.
The UA’s National Hispanic Scholarship awards $20,000 annually to out-of-state students who qualify. Once they’re admitted, students must take 12 units or more per semester and maintain a 3.0 GPA.
Bonano chose the UA over Columbia University, UCLA and Cal, in part because the other schools offered only partial financial aid.
Walking on
Bonano worked out for Arizona’s coaches shortly after enrolling at the UA last fall. At the time, the UA had two kickers — Jason Bondzio and Alex Zendejas — and didn’t need an extra one.
“After the season, they called me back and told me to keep kicking,” he said.
Bonano was added to the Wildcats’ roster before the start of spring drills. Because of his full academic ride, Bonano doesn’t count against the UA’s scholarship limit.
Travelin’ man
Bonano’s backup role means he’ll travel to most, if not all, of the UA’s road games as insurance. Though he has been battling a groin strain lately, Bonano could eventually push Zendejas for the starting job. Special teams coach Jeff Hammerschmidt likes Bonano’s leg, especially on kickoffs.
“Right now, he’s the No. 2 guy. As soon as he’s healthy, I wouldn’t be shocked if he helped out and did some things — maybe some kickoffs or field goals,” Hammerschmidt said.
Blessed balance
Bonano insists there’s more to his life than just football and studying. He’s a member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and is well-liked among his teammates. Bonano is a die-hard sports fan, with the NFL’s Chicago Bears among his favorite teams.
Though he tries to enjoy himself, Bonano knows that success — both on the field and in the classroom — requires sacrifice.
“Just last year, I was hoping to get on the team,” he said. “Now that I’m on it, I want to keep working hard.”
POLL RESULTS
Who has the highest GPA on the team?
• John Bonano, sophomore place-kicker — 35 percent
• Chris Gronkowski, senior H-back — 31 percent
• Rob Gronkowski, junior tight end — 15 percent
• R.J. Young, redshirt freshman linebacker — 13 percent
• Nicolas Grigsby, junior running back — 7 percent

Matt Bosher, Miami Kicker misses 2 Field Goals

September 17, 2009 kickingsystem Leave a comment

September 17th, 2009

I had a chance to watch the Miami/Georgia Teach game tonight and saw Matt Bosher missed two field goals. They were east field goals, inside 40 yards. His first two misses inside 40 yards. I can only imagine how he was feeling as he was walking off the field as Coach Shannon was staring him down.

Which leads me to believe, although he punts and kicks for Miami, (he does not kickoff) can he handle both?  Kicking & punting are two different types if kicking styles and maybe it will play into his kicking as he career moves on. It had been noted that he was the team MVP last year, how will his confidence be after tonight.  Hopefully he will be thinking about his next kick and not his last.
